Pool Water Balance 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Success

The ideal range for Total Alkalinity is between 80 and 120 parts per million (ppm). If your TA is too low, your pH will be unstable and difficult to control. If it is too high, your pH will naturally drift upward, and you’ll find yourself constantly adding acid to bring it back down. pH Levels: The Sweet Spot

The pH scale measures how acidic or basic your water is on a scale of 0 to 14. For a swimming pool, the "sweet spot" is between 7.4 and 7.6. This range is critical for two reasons: it is the same pH as the human eye, and it is the range where chlorine is most effective.

If your pH drops below 7.2, the water becomes acidic, leading to equipment corrosion and eye sting. If it rises above 7.8, the water becomes basic (alkaline). In high-pH water, your chlorine becomes sluggish and loses its ability to kill algae and bacteria effectively. Always adjust your pH after you have stabilized your alkalinity.

Chlorine Levels: Keeping It Sanitary

Once your foundation is set, it is time to look at your chlorine levels. Chlorine is the primary sanitizer that keeps your water safe by killing pathogens and neutralizing organic contaminants like sweat and oils.

For most residential pools, you want to maintain a "Free Chlorine" level between 1.0 and 4.0 ppm. It is vital to distinguish between Free Chlorine (the stuff available to kill germs) and Combined Chlorine (the "used up" chlorine that causes the strong chemical smell). If your pool smells strongly of chlorine, it actually means you need more sanitizer or a shock treatment to break down the combined chlorines.

Calcium Hardness and Stabilizer

While pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels are the "Big Three," two other factors play a role in pool water balance. Calcium Hardness measures how much calcium is dissolved in the water. If it’s too low, the water becomes "hungry" and will leach calcium from your pool walls. If it’s too high, you’ll see white, crusty scale buildup.

Cyanuric Acid (CYA), often called "stabilizer" or "sunscreen for chlorine," is also essential. Without stabilizer, the UV rays from the sun can burn off your chlorine in a matter of hours. Maintaining a level of 30-50 ppm ensures your chlorine stays in the water long enough to do its job.

Step-by-Step Balancing Routine

To keep your pool in top shape, follow this simple weekly workflow:

  1. Test the Water: Use a high-quality liquid drop kit or take a sample to a professional. Test strips are okay for a quick check, but liquid kits provide better accuracy.
  2. Adjust Alkalinity First: Use sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to raise it or muriatic acid to lower it.
  3. Adjust pH: Once TA is stable, use pH Increaser (soda ash) or pH Decreaser (sodium bisulfate) to hit that 7.4-7.6 range.
  4. Sanitize: Check your chlorine levels and adjust your feeder or add liquid chlorine as needed.
  5. Circulate: Always run your pump for at least 4-6 hours after adding chemicals to ensure they are evenly distributed.
